Dr. Xuan Shi, Ph.D.
Dr. Xuan Shi received his Ph.D. in Geography from West Virginia University. His dissertation "The Dynamic Integration of Distributed GIS through Semantic Web Services" explored how to dynamically integrate distributed geospatial computational resources through interoperable application programming interfaces (APIs) formulated as semantic request and response. As a research scientist in the Center for GIS, Dr. Shi focuses on the research of distributed GIS, internet computing, semantic Web services in collaboration with varied researchers at Georgia Tech and conducts GIS and other application development. Dr. Shi is a member of the Board of Directors in the Cyberinfrastructure Specialty Group (CISG) of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and serves as the CISG Secretary. Before joining Georgia Tech in 2007, he was the lead GIS programmer and analyst in the West Virginia GIS Technical Center where he developed many state-wide GIS projects. In 1996, he was one of the three scholars in China who received the International Travel Grant from the International Geographical Union (IGU). In 2000, he was one of the four scholars in the world who received the International Relations Fund from the Geographical Association (GA) of the United Kingdom. In 2005, he received the University Scholarship from the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), the International Geographic Information Fund from the Association of American Geographers (AAG), and the Student Paper Award from the University Consortium of Geographic Information Science (UCGIS).
