Georgia Tech Campus Transformation

GT Sign For the first time in the history of the Olympic games, the Olympic Village will be contained on one campus. In preparation for the 1996 Olympiad, the Georgia Institute of Technology campus was slowly enclosed behind barricades. It became more and more difficult for Georgia Tech students, staff and faculty to enter the premises. The campus is preparing itself for the world's best athletes who will soon refer to Georgia Tech as their "home away from home."

The location of Georgia Tech provides an ideal setting for an Olympic Village, its 330 acre campus are ample for housing the athletes, coaches and the security staff. Moreover, its technologically advanced infrastructure enhances the spirit of the 1996 Olympiad as the event reaches close to the end of the millennium.

GT Plaza AreaGeorgia Tech faculty had a significant impact on the selection of Atlanta as the host for the 1996 Olympiad. They developed an interactive, multi-media presentation that allowed the International Olympic Committee to preview the 1996 Olympic venues before they were built. As the summer Olympic events come closer, the campus is striving to deliver the goods it had promised. The construction of Olympic Village facilities and the adaptation of existing ones has cost more than $200 million in a matter of three years.

The new heart of the Georgia Tech campus is designed by landscape architects EDAW Inc. It will function as the Olympic Plaza and symbolize the international spirit of the games and it depicts the transformation of the campus over the last three years. According to President Wayne Clough, "it creates a sense of place, something all great universities share." The plaza will be the site for ceremonies and festivities during the Olympic and millions of television viewers around the world will associate it with Georgia Tech for generations to come.
