The Big Chicken
Driving north of Atlanta on US 41 (Cobb Parkway) to Marietta, past all the strip shopping centers, car dealerships, and
fast food joints, one cannot help but notice an Atlanta landmark at least the equal to the
Olympic Cardron or Taz's Torch. Looming four
stories high, on the crest of the hill at the intersection of GA 120 (Roswell Rd.) is the "Big Chicken". This gargantuan
foul not only towers over the landscape but is animated as well. The beak opens and closes as its eyes rotate. Once a
locally owned restaurant/ice cream shop, it is now the property of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The franchise recently rebuilt
the chicken for a cost of more than several of their normal outlets. All traffic directions in the Marietta area are given with reference to the "Big Chicken". For example: proceed to the "Big Chicken" and turn left, or three blocks after the "Big Chicken" turn right.
