CODA Public Spaces Program.... Atlanta 1996

view of atlanta park Designed to create and enhance quality permanent public spaces within the Olympic Ring, the Public Spaces Program of the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA) will leave a legacy which is civic in nature. The Public Spaces Program seeks to create spaces to enjoy, to commemorate our unique heritage and to help bind us together as citizens of a city which values its public environment. Great international cities are measured in large part by the accessibility of their streets, parks and public spaces to their citizens and visitors. In addition to meeting the specific requirements of the Olympic Games in 1996 CODA seeks to leave behind public spaces which are usable, safe, maintainable and memorable. The Public Spaces Program, along with Neighborhood Revitalization in fifteen low density/ low income neighborhoods within the Olympic Ring forms CODA's overall agenda prior to the Olympic Games. Nearly half of CODA's 75 million dollar public spaces investment occurs in these neighborhoods.

Clara Axam, CODA President

Goals

The CODA Public Spaces Program mobilizes both public and private resources to support a series of projects which meet the following goals:

  • To provide permanent enhanced public open spaces and parks for both civic and recreational uses.
  • To provide pedestrian circulation and public spaces for gatherings and special events required by the Olympics and the Cultural Olympiad.
  • To improve the City's public infrastructure of streets, utilities, bridges, etc., wherever possible.
  • To act a catalyst to encourage short and long term public and private development in areas adjacent to public spaces.
