ZOO ATLANTA
Zoo Atlanta's Gorilla Conservation Efforts
Zoo Atlanta has a strong commitment to conservation. Efforts to conserve endangered species and habitats are one of the primary goals of the zoo's current and future efforts in the areas of education and research. By educating young people through exciting and entertaining means, the zoo can empower individuals to take action to help preserve our natural resources. The Virtual Gorilla Project is one such "edu-tainment" tool, but Zoo Atlanta's conservation efforts do not stop there.
Zoo Atlanta is active in gorilla conservation efforts locally, nationally, and internationally. The zoo houses 19 Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Ford African Rain Forest, one of the largest collections of gorillas in North America. Willie B., Kudzoo, Ivan and gorillas on loan from the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center of Emory University live in four family groups that not only educate and entertain the public, but serve as ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. The zoo has numerous educational programs which focus on everything from teaching Atlanta area students the basics of gorilla behavior research to presenting the conservation needs of gorillas from a field biologist's perspective. Zoo Director, Dr. Terry Maple, is a full-time, tenured faculty member of the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Psychology and the zoo provides support for graduate students for basic and applied gorilla research. The zoo actively pursues and supports research efforts in gorilla behavior and reproduction, exhibit design, and conservation education.
