VIRTUAL GORILLA PROJECT
"GORILLAS IN THE BITS"

DEVELOPMENT OF
THE VIRTUAL GORILLA PROJECT

CORE DEVELOPMENT

The VR Gorilla Exhibit is a Virtual Reality rendition of the real Gorilla Exhibit at Zoo Atlanta. Data provided by Zoo Atlanta includes actual terrain elevations, texture maps of foliage, and blueprints and site measurements of architectural structures. The modeled environment consists of the four main gorilla habitats, two auxiliary habitats, visitor pathways, exhibit areas, as well as the night holding facilities of the gorillas. Georgia Tech's Simple Virtual Environment (SVE) Toolkit is used to create an interactive, real-time virtual environment for exploration and learning.

The virtual gorillas are modeled based on anthropomorphic data from Zoo Atlanta. The gorilla model currently consists of 10 body parts and 9 joints with a total of 20 degrees of freedom. Motions are keyframed. The keyframes are generated from video of actual gorillas at Zoo Atlanta, and from behavioral data of gorilla movements. Keyframes currently illustrate characteristic locomotion modes and stances, such as walking on four or three legs, standing, squatting, lying down, staring aggressively, and chest-beating.

Gorilla behavioral data is derived from field notes and documentation gathered by Zoo Atlanta Researchers. This data was used in conjunction with expert advice from the zoo researchers who detailed behaviorial actions and reactions. (Some times even re-enacting the behavior on site, for Georgia Tech researchers!)
