Landmark Torch

Taz Anderson, a local developer and former Georgia Tech football star, has given Atlanta yet another landmark in the form of a burning torch that he calls the Centennial Tower. He is also responsible for the creation of the orange peaches that now crown several tall buildings in Atlanta. The 16 foot flickering electric flame is carefully placed over a 123 feet steel tower and is enveloped within an observation deck. The base of this structure will have a souvenir shop in anticipation of the crowd that will traverse the streets of Atlanta during the Olympics.

According to Anderson, this structure makes a reference to the torch of the Statue of Liberty in New York; but ACOG has accused Anderson of exploiting an Olympic symbol in his flamed-topped structure adjacent to the Varsity. Like the 1996 Olympic Torch, Anderson hopes that his torch will also be a "lasting legacy" for the city of Atlanta. Landmark Torch
