Centennial Olympic Caldron
Mounted above a 132 foot tower and accessible by a 190 foot long bridge, the Centennial Olympic Caldron has been likened to a McDonalds French fry package. It is essentially a piece of sheet steel rolled into a cone. Even though it is 21 feet, tall it appears dwarfed by the structure on which it stands. Conceived by Minnesota-based artist Siah Armajani, the caldron uses tiles of Georgia red clay to trace the top edge of the spiral formed by the twisting of the cone. Atlanta Journal Constitution Visual Arts Critic Catherine Fox says "...it looks cute in comparison to the rest of the piece, or dapper - like a handkerchief sticking out of a breast pocket. But basically disappointing: From the west, the bright bowl, an abstracted version of the flame, looks a bit like a waffle cone. From the east, it looks like a blob. Which is to say, the caldron doesn't exactly light my fire." Our guess is that the caldron will only appear complete when it is lit with the Olympic Flame. At that point , hopefully, the flame will become the star attraction and thus the disparate scales of the tower and the bridge will be less noticeable.
