The Mascot: 1996 Olympics

izzy picture What can we say about Izzy? The Official Olympic Mascot was originally presented to ACOG on videotape as an animated character who changed itself into a variety of sub-characters. Originally called "whatizzit", the animation so impressed ACOG officials that they bought into a character that has been at the heart of many jokes around Atlanta. However recent trips to Atlanta's malls have shown that the sales of Izzy dolls and other paraphernalia have been brisk.

Many Atlanta residents think that other mascots would be better than the blue blob, for instance, "Brer Rabbit" or "Willie B," the popular Gorilla at the Atlanta Zoo named after former Atlanta mayor William B. Hartsfield. Some disgruntled residents recently came up with their own mascot, a dog named "Pizzy" for their group which they have named ADOG, that is abbreviated for Atlantans Disgusted with Official Games.
