 Georgia Tech Aquatic Center
Hosting four disciplines of aquatics, the new Georgia Tech Aquatic
Center is beautiful and full of intrigue. It consists of the Olympic swimming
pool, a diving pool, a water polo pool, and an outdoor stadium.
To enhance the versatility of the swimming pool, designers created
a floor that can be raised and lowered, controlling the depth of the water
to allow multiple activities. Six cameras are installed by the pool desk
to measure the stroke rate of the athletes as part of a bio-mechanics
project. Around the pool 25-ft. decks have been built for variety of uses
during and after the Olympics. The Olympic uses consist of swimming and
synchronized swimming.
The diving pool has both 1m and 3m springboards, as well as full 5m,
7.5m, and 10m towers. On the 10m platform a force plate has been installed
to measure the different rates of push off by the athletes.
The adjacent water polo pool can seat 4,000 spectators. It is outdoor
like the swimming and diving pools, but it is uncovered.
The outdoor main stadium seats 14,600 spectators. It is covered by
an 115-ft. roof with photo voltaic panels that use solar power to supply
the building with electricity. This facility, although beautiful, had a
time of ugliness. In March of 1996, four workers were forced to abandon
the site. The evacuation was caused by the bending of a truss, which caused
it to twist and fall. Fifteen minutes before it fell a worker made the
comment, "This thing is about to fold up," to his foreman. In
the days after the accident, the designers and builders investigated where
they went wrong. Since then the complex has been modified and is now safe
for all the athletes and travelers of the world.
This $17.5 million dollar facility will be donated by ACOG to Georgia
Tech. Tech will use it for intercollegiate aquatic activities and the surrounding
community.
