Olympic Stadium

Photo of Olympic Stadium with Cauldron

The Olympic Stadium, located just south of Atlanta, will be the focal point of the 1996 Olympic Games and will host both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The Stadium consists of seating for 85,000 people, which dwarfs the adjacent Atlanta Fulton County Stadium which can only hold a maximum of 52,000 people.
The groundbreaking for this mammoth facility was July 10, 1993 and was planned to be completed in the first quarter of 1996. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games allotted $207 million to the project, which includes the money for the conversion of the facility into a 45,000 seat baseball stadium to house the Braves after the Atlanta Fulton County Stadium is torn down. The construction of the venue, unfortunately, did not go without problems. The lighting towers were designed with a fatal flaw which caused one of the towers to fall and claim the life of one of the construction workers. The problem was solved after ACOG ordered that the towers be reinforced. Photo of Olympic Stadium Stands
Besides hosting both the Opening and Closing ceremonies and 8 days of athletic track & field events, the stadium will also be host to the Olympic Caldron. The massive, free-standing basin of the Caldron will be visible through-out the entire stadium and will contain the Olympic Flame.
